What? Start a new magazine in this economy? Are we nuts?
We hope not. We believe that promoting healthy and sustainable local living is the only hope for weathering the economic, environmental, and social storms facing our nation. Where do we go when the going gets tough? We return to family, to our community, and we reconnect with nature.
The mission of Teton Family is to provide unique, usable information for local residents to make their lives better. Perhaps this means advice on how to plant fruit trees that thrive in the Teton environment, how to handle your 6-year old’s budding interest in the Internet, what to cook with all the spaghetti squash you just bought at the farmer’s market, or how to explore the Red Desert. The magazine is a collaboration between freelance writer and food activist, Sue Muncaster, professional food photographer Paulette Phlipot, and Powder Mountain Press’ publisher Nancy McCullough-McCoy.
What is sustainable and healthy? Buying Local. Eating fresh. Sitting around the dinner table with family and friends. Exploring with kids. Getting to know your neighbors. Green Building. What’s not? Over- consumption. Over-development. Fast food. Cheap plastic. “Us” vs. “Them.” We promise not to preach and we don’t believe that sustainability means you have to sacrifice life’s pleasures.
Teton Family will be distributed free of cost. For this reason we will depend entirely on our advertisers. We believe that the businesses that can attract and maintain a local following are the ones who will thrive in the new economy, rather than those dependent on tourism. Our goal is to make the magazine sustainable advertisers as well as readers. We will keep advertising rates low by keeping our production costs reasonable. Teton Family will be printed locally and we are foregoing a flashy slick look for a more “down-to-earth,” artsy, clean format.
